Union Mission opened the Day Center at Grace House to provide an environment offering recreation and relaxation to the homeless searching for stability and safety after carrying the burdens of trauma, substance abuse and homelessness.

With the ultimate goal of moving people to stable housing, this new program will provides individuals experiencing homelessness with basic daytime needs such as food, and clothing, along with referrals and access to resources, supportive services, and shelter from weather conditions.

The Day Center at Grace House is open to the homeless community Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 4:00pm, Saturday from 8:30am – 2:00pm,  excluding holidays.

Expanding Our Reach

Rising community needs have led to increasing services.

Union Mission opened its original Day Center at Grace House more than 28 months ago and has filled a critical community need. Unsheltered homelessness was leaving many unhoused individuals with no place to go during the day. In partnership with the City of Savannah and the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless, the Day Center is providing support services and warm meals for men and women seeking respite Monday – Saturday. While initially planning to serve 50 clients daily, the Day Center now averages 119 per day, with a recent record of 144. Union Mission has served 1,551 unduplicated individuals in the Day Center since opening.

In 2024, Union Mission acquired the former Family Dollar building at 702 West Oglethorpe Avenue to increase our capacity and impact in the face of this growing need.

Bridging Community Gaps

New building, new programs, new partnerships.

Expansion is the next step in bolstering its successful Day Center with services that provide case management, mental health counseling, workforce development, engagement, and many other wrap around services that help the homeless address barriers to employment and housing. The new Resource Center will include a Day Center, but the current center’s growth requires a strategic expansion to increase solutions and better serve our clients’ dynamic needs. This expansion will provide space to increase Union Mission’s impact and help us better collaborate and engage to offer a wide range of our own and partner services, providing holistic support that meets immediate needs and empowers people on their journey to self-sufficiency.

Union Mission partnered with a SCAD SERVE “Design for Good” class to help envision the interior and exterior design of the new Resource Center. The transformation of the building is to provide services addressing the many barriers faced by the homeless. The collaboration showcases SCAD’s creativity and Union Mission’s history of partnering with people to end their homelessness.
