Parent and Child Services

Parent and Child Services exists to meet the physical, emotional and educational needs of children residing with their families in Union Mission facilities. The program uses prevention methods to provide homeless children with tools to become successful in their endeavors. Services are provided to children residing in the Magdalene Project, Shelter Plus Care Programs, the Savannah Runaway Shelter, the Phoenix Project and through collaboration with Social Apostolate.

Through the use of research-based curriculum, classes are provided weekly covering topics in abstinence education, drug prevention, parenting and life skills for families served by Union Mission. These programs are designed to empower children with tools needed to be successful in life.

Parent and Child Services also assists with school enrollment processes, school supply needs and after school tutoring. After school programs have been developed at two housing services locations with certified teachers on site who structure homework time and provide special tutoring.

Parent and Child Services also provides enrichment activities for families. Activities include summer camp, art classes, field trips, birthday celebrations and attendance to local cultural festivities. During the holidays, there is special holiday programming so families can experience different ways of celebrating. The holiday program is a favorite among families, volunteers, staff and the community.

Currently a program is being created to assist preschool age children with school readiness. This will compliment the existing after school programs and provide structured learning for preschoolers to improve letter, number, shape, color recognition and more. The goal is to strengthen the relationship between parents and schools, improve grades, study habits and motivation.
